Starting Off with a Shameful and Criminal Bang

The deafening silence from American government officials and from the US media regarding the criminal Israeli assault against civilians in Israel’s ghetto of Gaza, where nearly 1.5 million Palestinians are trapped every bit as brutally as were the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto, is beyond unconscionable. Obama’s (lack of) response: Shameful?  No doubt about it.  Criminal?  Not yet.  But we’ll see in time.

Criminality?  No question.  Bush, Olmert, Obama – should all be behind jars.  But in this world, might makes right.

The logic of this article is just plain idiotic.  The complaint against Israel is that, unlike Hamas, it can aim its weaponry better and they have more of it.  Their attacks are more massive and more deadly and so they are somehow less moral.  So I suppose to make everything “even” and for the Israelis to be more moral (like Hamas), they  should just fire artillery shells randomly into Gaza.  I should think we progressives can be incisive without being simple minded fools.  Please!

While I cannot condone Hamas’ use of rockets targeting anyone and anything, I don’t condemn them too harshly either.  Why?  well, first of all, they’re almost entirely ineffective.  A tiny number of people are killed, or even hurt.  And, on top of it, I have a level of empathy.  I would think that someone like Sactown, or anyone else, lived in near-ghetto conditions – and had restricted access to food, water, health care, travel, and the like – eventually they’d get pissed off and try to retaliate with force.

So, without rambling too much – I oppose the use of violence, but have an understanding of what drives people to it.

Look Dave, here are the facts:  Israel withdrew from occupying Gaza.  Hamas proceeded to fire thousands of rockets and mortars into Israel aim indiscriminately at civilians.  Those are called “terror weapons.”  Israel apparently values one life as one life too many to lose.  They tried to get the Hamas government to stop firing missiles and they refused.  Israel imposed an economic blockade, which is less than military action.  That did not move Hamas but they eventually agreed to a cease fire, apparently so that they could rearm.  Then when they were rearmed Hamas let the cease fire lapse.  Then they started firing more missiles again.    Some of the missiles are Grad missiles manufactured in China and supplied by Iran.  700,000 people in southern Israel are in range.   If Hamas stopped firing missiles they could have another cease fire or even a peace treaty, but their stated objective is the conquer Israel and make it a Muslim fundamentalist state.  Now if Mexico was firing hundreds of largely ineffective missiles into the United States and only was killing a few people every week, what do you think would happen?  Dude, it’s nice to be a sympathetic bleeding heart liberal (I am one myself), but that doesn’t mean you check your critical thinking at the door.

wow, the misinformation is running rampant here tonight.  Here’s the facts.  Israel has been totally oppressing the people of palestine for decades.  A person has to be insane or a liar if they think that there’s not going to be people who would dedicate their life – and death – to the destruction of that government.

Dave is right on.  ST, on the other hand, seems to be the type that probably cheered on the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan too.  Sad how “progressives” have become so pro-war these ways.  Disgusting frauds.

Personally, I’d like to see the government of Israel gone, and the same for Palestine, and the US too.

Governments by their inherent nature, are evil.  This horrible situation is just another example of that reality.

Kristal,  Israel and the Palestinians have been at war since 1948, including wars in 1956, 1967, and 1973.  In 1967, a bunch of Arab countries attacked Israel and got beat . . . badly.  Israel occupied the Sinai and West Bank.  Israel occupied Gaza until 2006.  Obviously a military occupation by the victorious country of the defeated country, when the defeated country resorts to terrorism, is going to be very oppressive.  Duh.  The idea is that you negotiate a peace agreement. In any event, Israel left Gaza so I just don’t get the oppression.  For some reason, the Palestinians think that they have a right to have an economic relationship with Israel and that Israel, a country they are at war with, has to trade with them.  I don’t think so.  As for getting rid of all governments, you’re smoking way to much weed and have entered into an alternative universe.
